Tonic For Heartache Nihilism & the Black Death

Mon Jul 6, 2009, 5:46 PM
The Death Cab for Cutie, Tegan and Sara, and New Pornographers show I went to was both fun and grand. I mean, really, how many shows are both fun AND grand? Okay, I bet a lot but, whatever I don't care! This was EPIC! FIREWORKS AND ALL! THAT'S RIGHT!

(btw...dang dA limits the title so pretend there are two commas in there.)

Anyway, my day started after finding out my sister and I had to take a shuttle there. I thought it was alright but, was a tad weary. All anxieties were put aside when we finally boarded the bus. My sister and I ended up going on the nice shuttle bus thing. It was like one of those Cardiffs. It REALLY made me feel like I was on a school trip or something. Except all the kids were indie hipsters and ranged from various ages. Don't worry the old folk didn't dress like youngins. Once I saw we reached our destination the place was ENORMOUS! Wait, enormous is an understatement. And there were literally a BAJILLION people. I kid you not. The place sold out so every freakin' seat was filled. And that place can hold quite a lot. Trust me, if you don't then go check the site for yourself! Before getting off the bus some lady was telling us where to meet and whatnot, it really did feel like middle school all over again. Except they wouldn't wait for you or worry if you were missing.

Finally stepping onto the grounds of the Hollywood Bowl it was WAY too much to soak in. Without my sister I would've been hopelessly lost. I probably wouldn't have even found the entrance! Ok I probably would've....now fast fowarding to when we got to the merch booth...

There were two tents with all the merchandise. Death Cab and The New Pornogrpahers were together while Tegan and Sara had their own. In all truths, I didn't like ANY of the Tegan and Sara and New Pornographers shirts. Tegan and Sara had decent designs with a whole front and back theme but, eh, I just didn't like. The New Pornogrpahers had some odd artsy ones. Odd as in not good. A few Death Cab ones were decent but not really any I liked. But, alas, I found the one thing I wanted! And it had all three bands together on it! Can you guess? Yeah? No? Whatever you don't care? Well, that's right! I ended up getting this AMAZING looking concert poster. I HAVE to post a picture of it. I WILL post a picture of it. I madly in love with it. After we went off to our seats!

Fast forwarding to when the New Pornographers came on. They were as great as the last time I saw them. Except last time I saw them I was WAY closer and was able to see the sweat dripping off their faces....not this time. They also pretty much had the same setlist except added a few songs from their most recent album Challengers. A.C. Newman said some greatly funny stuff and few favorite things he said(may not be exact word for word but you get the gist.): "Some people had problems with our name but Death Cab for Cutie is fine? I mean Cutie is going to a DEATH cab. This is just some friendly pornography." As I said not word for word and I probably butchered it but in my head it's still freakin' hilarious. Ah, I love A.C. Newman. Haha, and don't worry Death Cab, Tegan and Sara, and The New Pornographers all good friends. They kept announcing it during the show and dedicated songs to each other.
The New Pornographers setlist seemed short.

Now onto Tegan and Sara!
"L.A. isn't as pretty as our mom thought." Yes, they said that. And they talked a lot about how it was their mom's first time to LA and how that all went. And continued to say they didn't mean to offend and kept yapping on about random things. They had to cut two songs down! That was their conversation in a nutshell. Haha, I can't believe they actually used the term 'yapping'! I only know one other person who uses that word!
Tegan and Sara put on an extremely fun show. I especially LOVE their banter. It's freakin' awesome. They have good interaction with the crowd. Tegan and Sara and simply charming. They played a lot of my favorites or should I call them fan favorites? Cause some girl sitting across from me practically stood up to dance for every song. At least she was polite and told the people in back of her "sorry" and that she "just had to." I'm glad I wasn't behind her! A few songs they played were Living Room, Call it Off, Walking With a Ghost, Nineteen, Like O Like H (HAHAHA), and others but, I simply forget and they weren't in that order either if you're wondering.

ON TO DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE WITH THE LA PHILHARMONIC!:
Death Cab is not alright they are fantastical! I have a new appreciation for their song Transatlanticism. The fireworks and Philharmonic along with the ending of that song was MAGICAL. Seriously, the end of Transatlanticism was just repetitive and annoying but when live it really is amazing. I, too, don't think I can watch fireworks any other way again. Haha, but their set wasn't all magic and whatnot! They played Cath and I Will Possess Your Heart and I was all D: but still enjoyed it. Ben should just stop trying to write epic sounding songs cause they're not. The Philharmonic played alongside with them during the second half of the show. (Felt I had to put that somewhere so you would know and not think their WHOLE set had them.) Your Heart is an Empty Room was beautiful and Photobooth was fun. And yeah it kinda went like that for the rest of the show. Oh, there was a funny conversation between Ben and Chris and once I remember each piece of it I shall tell yoo! xD

It really did go by quick. Surprisingly, it ended at 10:20 but, hey, that's the Hollywood Bowl for ya. The crowd leaving was INTENSE as was the walk back down...I felt longer than when we went up! MAJOR traffic (of hipster kids) and random people trying to sell glowing butterflies and some guy playing the saxophone. After getting out of that mess I was afraid we wouldn't find the bus however! thank goodness my sister has good memory cause she spotted the bus and went right in. Fairly early too, there was only like 4 other people when we entered. OH, BTW I SAW DAVE MONKS IN THE BUS. Well, his doppelganger. He did look quite a lot like him except didn't have same haircut and didn't have a hint of a Canadian accent. Whatever, he bought Plans on vinyl he's cool in my book. Then we got back to Lakewood and my other sister picked us up went from In-N-Out to home.

Yup, that was the concert. I'll edit this later to make actual sense and some pictures. I feel deprived of sleep since I had to wake up early today. I also feel deprived of coffee cause I woke up late when I was suppose to wake up early and didn't have time to get any. So, does that equal frazzled? I guess so!
G'day!
